Developing Reading Comprehension Programme

Programme dates 2024-2025:

Day 1 – 2nd October 2024
Day 2 – 26th November 2024
Day 3 – 28th January 2025
Day 4 – 19th March 2025

Each day will begin at 9am with coffee from 8:30am.  Please sign in at the main office and you will be directed to the training room.  Parking is available beyond the school in front of the training rooms (demountable on the playground).  If the car park is full then there are few parking restrictions apart from in the immediate road outside the school, where there are double yellow lines.

Details of the programme:

  • 4 whole-day training sessions (1 per half term) from 9.00am to 4.00pm
  • Gap tasks between course days and opportunities for delegates to share progress with these
  • Opportunities to observe teaching strategies in action with pupils
  • Opportunities for action planning
  • Collaborative learning
  • Flexible content to meet the requirements of the group

The programme will focus on:

  • sharing effective practice 
  • adapting practice to meet the needs of the lowest 20% readers in order to move them to the least age-related expectations
  • efficient assessment of reading: pupil-perceptions, miscue analysis, fluency and comprehension
  • reading for pleasure
  • reading resilience
  • reading fluency
  • activating and generating prior knowledge for both fiction and non-fiction
  • vocabulary
  • reading for meaning
  • the teaching sequence for reading

Cost: £240 per person for four-day programme (lunch and refreshments included)
